Hannover Messe 2023: Indonesia-Germany Business Summit Strengthens Collaboration Between Countries and Regions

In a series of Hannover Messe 2023 industrial exhibition events, Indonesia is holding the Indonesia-Germany Business Summit on April 17 2023 Hannover time, at the International Convention Center, Hannover Fairgrounds.

The Business Summit which was opened by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was held thanks to cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, the Government of Germany, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) and the Asian-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA). This forum was attended by approximately 500 international audiences from industry players, policy makers from various countries, related associations, as well as general visitors.

In his speech, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, said that in the midst of global uncertainty, the Indonesian economy has actually become a bright spot. In 2022, Indonesia’s economy grew 5.31%, the highest since 2014. “Today, I invite Germany to be an important part of mutual progress. “The long-standing business partnership between Germany and Indonesia can be an example of North-South partnership, a partnership of equals, mutual respect, benefits, and the face of partnerships in the future,” said the President.

There are at least three things that are Indonesia’s priorities. First, downstream industry to increase added value, maintain sustainability and create employment opportunities. According to the President, Indonesia is ready to become a partner for the development of the semiconductor industry and electric vehicle battery production. “I hope for the support of German businesspeople to make Indonesia part of the global chip supply chain,” he explained.

Second, energy transition. For Indonesia, this is a commitment to creating a better world. Moreover, Indonesia’s new and renewable energy (EBT) potential is very large, reaching 434 thousand Mega Watts. In this case, Indonesia needs support from innovative financing, high technology transfer and workforce reskilling. Third, the development of the National Capital City (IKN) of the Archipelago. “This is a new hub that connects existing facilities in surrounding cities,” explained the President.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany is Indonesia’s largest business partner in Europe with more than 250 German companies having branches in Indonesia. He sees that Indonesia’s growth is impressive and is the right place to grow. “There are opportunities in partnerships related to the energy transition. Most importantly, new businesses can be built that develop cutting-edge technology that ensures climate neutrality and prosperity can work together. “I invite all of us to take advantage of this existing opportunity,” he said.

APA Chairman and President & CEO of Siemens AG Dr. Roland Busch stated that Indonesia and Germany could build a long-lasting partnership. This is one of the reasons why Indonesia is the official partner country at the Hannover Messe 2023. Apart from that, cooperation between Germany and Indonesia is mutually beneficial with high technology support from Germany and Indonesia which provides access to a large and growing market. “Indonesia is the right place to grow,” said Busch.

Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, M. Arsjad Rasjid PM, explained that green technology supports economic recovery through digitalization and renewable energy. By leveraging the power of digital transformation, we can create a more sustainable, efficient and resilient industry. Through this event, both parties hope that Indonesian and German business players can synergize and collaborate on sustainable industrial technology cooperation projects.

Also present at the forum were President Commissioner of Astra International Prijono Sugiarto and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors BASF SE Dr. Martin Brudermüller as the resource person for the discussion with the title Flashlight on Indonesia-German Business Cooperation. The discussion was moderated by Jan Rönnfeld, Executive Director of EKONID Germany.

Prijono Sugiarto said, compared to decades ago, Indonesia has now developed into a country with more stable business resilience. Meanwhile, Dr. Martin Brudermüller suggested that Indonesia focus on meeting the needs of the Indonesian people without having to do what European countries do. In this case, Brudermüller believes that Indonesia is capable of becoming a successful country in its own right.

According to him, there are several things that need to be noted. Indonesia’s resilience is more stable and provides various investment conveniences, so it is hoped that it will attract German entrepreneurs to invest.
