US: No Obvious Threat To NATO from Wagner Mercenary Groups

According to the United States, it is not yet clear what territorial threat Wagner’s forces pose in Europe, national security spokesman John Kirby said Wednesday (16/8).

Asked about the movement of Wagner Group troops, Kirby said some of the group’s contingents remained deployed in Africa, some to Belarus, and some could still be in Ukraine or nearby.

Rear Admiral Kirby said the US government was paying attention to Minsk’s “provocative acts” and aggressive rhetoric.

On Wednesday, Lithuania decided to close two of its six border crossing points with Belarus due to “geopolitical circumstances,” weeks after the Russian mercenary group had taken refuge in Belarus.

The Lithuanian government did not elaborate on the circumstances or the threats in question, prompting it to close two of its border crossing points from Friday (18/8), which have not been used by commercial vehicles so far.
