Türkiye’s Communications Directorate on Thursday organized a discussion titled “The Dilemma of the International System: Quo Vadis?” in Berlin, Germany.
Representatives from the German public sector, academia, think tanks, and civil society organizations, as well as members of the German press, attended the discussion, which focused on strategies and opportunities for international cooperation with a sense of shared responsibility in the face of global peace and security challenges.
The meeting assessed the devastation and humanitarian tragedy caused by the international system’s ineffectiveness in the face of current global issues and conflicts.
Approaches to reforming the international system were also discussed.
Associate Professor Cagatay Ozdemir, deputy head of Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, emphasized their focus on international crises during his speech at the meeting and pointed out the inadequacy of the UN Security Council structure, particularly in addressing the resolution of international crises and conflicts.
He noted that the international community could overcome the lack of resolution and conflict by establishing new mechanisms.
Highlighting the significance of the relationship between Türkiye and Germany in this context, Ozdemir said combating disinformation is a primary goal, given the prevalence of disinformation and black propaganda activities in traditional and social media.
Türkiye’s Ambassador to Berlin Ahmet Basar Sen at the event said the current international system established after World War II is inadequate for achieving global peace and stability.
He noted that the system falls short of resolving issues ranging from Ukraine to Palestine.
Sen pointed out that the diversification and increased complexity of international problems, ranging from terrorism to climate change, xenophobia to irregular migration, have rendered the existing international system ineffective.
He advocated for international system reform in order to create a more just world.
Following the opening speeches, participants provided comments and suggestions on the dilemmas confronting the international system.
The meeting highlighted the need for close relations between Türkiye and Germany to address these challenges.
