Russian Airstrikes, Kyiv Residents Urged to Go to Shelter

Several explosions were heard in various parts of Kyiv Friday (11/8) morning. Earlier, Mayor Vitali Klitschko had urged residents to enter shelters from airstrikes and Ukrainian officials issued a nationwide warning about airstrikes.

Ukraine shot down a missile near the city’s children’s hospital Friday. Missile debris fell near the hospital in Kyiv, but there were no reports of injuries.

Meanwhile, the sky above two of Russia’s airports – Vnukovo and Kalugo – was temporarily closed Friday due to drone flights. Both of these airports have now reopened.

In its daily intelligence report on the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Friday, the UK Ministry of Defense said there was a “realistic possibility” that a “small number” of Wagner Group advisers would be present as Belarusian troops conduct exercises in the Grodno area in northwestern Belarus, near the borders of Poland and Lithuania.

The UK ministry said Wagner’s advisers would likely act as coaches in Belarus. It also noted that the Belarus Defense Ministry said the drills in Grodno were “intended to incorporate lessons learned by the Russian military in Ukraine.”

“Russia almost certainly really wants to push Belarusian forces against NATO,” the UK ministry said. However, it is unlikely that Belarusian troops deployed to Grodno have the “capabilities necessary to make them combat ready.”
