Russia Shoots Down Ukrainian Drone, Two Injured in Moscow

Two people were injured in Moscow on Monday when the wreckage of a Ukrainian drone destroyed by Russian air defenses fell on a house, the region’s governor said.

Russian officials said Ukraine launched drone strikes aimed at the Moscow and Kaluga areas. The airstrikes temporarily disrupted operations at several Russian airports, but service was later restored.

Russia and Ukraine both use drones to target adversaries, with damage on the ground often being caused by the wreckage of drones shot down.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Danish legislators as he addressed them Monday, a day after Denmark and the Netherlands announced they would provide Ukrainian forces with US-made F-16 fighter jets.

Danish PM Mette Frederiksen promised 19 F-16s for Ukraine and said she expected the first six jets to be delivered sometime in early 2024.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte did not specify how many F-16s his country would deliver, nor did he specify when the deliveries would take place. He said the time depended on how quickly the Ukrainian crew and infrastructure were ready.

“The F-16s are not going to be of immediate assistance to the war effort now. However this is a long term commitment from the Netherlands,” Rutte said Sunday. “We want the jets to be up and running as soon as possible… Not for the next month, that’s impossible, but hopefully not long after that.”

The Dutch and Danish governments are involved in a coalition working to train Ukrainian pilots to fly advanced fighter jets.

The fighter jets are unlikely to affect the course of the war any time soon, US officials say.
