Frankfurt, Germany – The Indonesian Embassy in Frankfurt, in collaboration with Merpati e.V. and a number of community and religious organisations, as well as the Indonesian Students’ Association Alliance (PPI), held the Indonesian People’s Market 2023 at Bockenheimer Warte, Frankfurt am Main on 1-2 July 2023. This event, which is a first of its kind, is to promote Indonesia in Germany, through a people’s market held in an open space in the heart of Frankfurt, allowing a wide audience to directly enjoy Indonesian art, culture, and cuisine.
Prof. Dr. Arndt Graf from Goethe-Universität expressed hope that this event could become a regular event every year. Dr. Jofi Puspa, Chairperson of Merpati e.V., as a representative of the coalition of community organisations, stated that besides promoting Indonesia among the German society, this event also supports the synergy of community organisations in the working area.
A 40-metre-long Indonesian national flag was paraded at the beginning of the event to mark the opening of the Indonesian People’s Market, which also served as a farewell event for the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Frankfurt and Mrs. Lilies Ekawaty Somantri, who will conclude their assignment on 31 July 2023. Consul General Acep Somantri, in his opening speech, expressed appreciation for all the community organisations in the working area that have supported all the programs during their term, ensuring that the activities ran smoothly and surpassed the target achievements.
Approximately 2,000 people visited the Indonesian People’s Market 2023, enjoying cultural performances for two days, ranging from regional dances from Sabang to Merauke, angklung performances, and bands playing popular Indonesian and Western songs. There was also a demonstration of cooking a vegan dish, Gado-gado, which was also favoured by the people in Germany.
The Indonesian People’s Market 2023 was enlivened with a bazaar offering various Indonesian culinary delights and products from Indonesian MSMEs. Despite the cloudy skies that persisted until the afternoon, Indonesian cuisine and various snacks and drinks brightened the day and the hearts of the visitors. A variety of dishes and Indonesian MSME products became an attraction for the German community to explore the culinary and cultural heritage of Indonesia. The Indonesian People’s Market is expected to become a regular promotional event for Indonesia in the heart of Frankfurt.
