After Germany pulled off a shocking upset over the United States in the semifinals of the 2023 FIBA World Cup, the final is now set as they will take on Serbia.
The result means that for the second tournament in a row the Americans may fail to win a medal, while a European team will take home FIBA’s most important tournament.
This is the first time that Germany has reached the World Cup final, a feat that came thanks to the 113-111 win over Team USA.
But the road to the title will not be easy for the Germans. They will face Serbia, who took down Canada, considered one of the favorites to win the tournament, in the semifinals.
The team coached by Svetislav Pesics overcame the Canadians by a score of 95-86, thus securing a medal and the possibility of being champions.
Should the Serbs win gold, it will be their first as an independent country. As the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, when Montenegro was united with Serbia prior to its independence in 2006, they won two golds; and as Yugoslavia they won three.
