Germany will become a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) member with the second largest helicopter fleet after announcing in July the purchase of 60 Chinooks, German Air Force chief Ingo Gerhartz said Friday.
“We will become the country with the largest helicopter fleet in NATO after the United States,” Gerhartz said, as quoted by the German media network RND.
In July, Reuters reported that Germany would buy 60 Chinook helicopters from Boeing.
The purchase was made in a package whose value will reach up to eight billion euros (around IDR 133.86 trillion), including for the procurement of infrastructure needed for helicopters.
Nearly 50 Chinook helicopters will be stationed in the Holzdorf/Schoenewalde area in eastern Germany. An additional 1,000 troops will also be assigned to the area, Gerhartz said.
“The Schoenewalde area will play a special role for the Air Force, the entire Bundeswehr (German armed forces) and German security,” he said.
