A long-term security guarantee is a commitment that Germany can provide to Ukraine while the war is still ongoing. This solution in fact dashed the hopes of Kyiv, which wanted to immediately join as a permanent member of NATO in order to end the war.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Thursday (22/6) said the current situation made it impossible to make Ukraine part of NATO.
Therefore, said Scholz, Germany can only promise military guarantees that will be given to Ukraine until the country is free from Russian aggression.
“We must pay attention to the current situation. Therefore, I suggest that we focus on the main priority (at the NATO Summit) in Vilnius (in mid-July), namely strengthening Ukraine’s fighting power,” he said, as publishedThe Jerusalem Post.
Germany, together with the G7 and the European Union, is trying to agree on long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
The guarantees include continued support for modern Western weapons and strengthening Ukraine’s economy.
NATO member states are debating what they will offer Ukraine during a summit in Vilnius on July 11-12.
NATO has not yet put Ukraine’s membership on the agenda at meetings because of the unfinished war. This was done to avoid unwanted escalation.
