Borrell Made a Statement About Ukraine’s Membership in NATO

The possibility of Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance has not yet been discussed. This question is not studied, as before.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the statement of the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell in an interview with the Spanish TV channel laSexta.

At the same time, Borrell recalled that Ukraine had long asked to join the Alliance and added: “The issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO is not on the table, it was not there before.”

The head of European diplomacy also noted that the decision on Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance will be made by its members, and this does not depend on the NATO Secretary General.

Commenting on Finland’s entry into NATO and Sweden’s intention to join the Alliance, he said that these countries remained neutral until the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“They were neutral countries that never wanted to know anything about NATO. But when they saw that Russia invaded Ukraine, they said that the only way to guarantee our security is to be members of the Alliance. And they asked to join quickly,” he explained. Borrell.

Recall that recently NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that
all NATO member countries support the idea of Ukraine joining the Alliance. However, the question is when this will happen.

In addition, earlier President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine understands that it will not be able to become a NATO member during the war, but wants to receive a clear signal that it will gain membership after the end of hostilities.
