Russia and Ukraine accused each other of carrying out several drone attacks on their respective territories on Wednesday (30/8/2023).
This made war tensions increasingly heated, which resulted in new casualties.
The following are other developments related to the Russia-Ukraine war, as compiled by CNBC Indonesia from various sources:
Ukraine Bombards 6 Russian Regions
On Wednesday, Ukraine attacked six points on Russian territory, including the airport where they destroyed a military transport plane.
Russian officials, quoted by Reuters, said the attacks took place in the Pskov, Bryansk, Kaluga, Orlov, Ryazan and Moscow regions.
In Pskov, northern Russia, more than 600 km (400 miles) from Ukraine, a large fire broke out at a military airfield. The TASS news agency reported that at least four Il-76 giant transport planes were damaged, two of which caught fire.
Footage published by the Pskov governor on Telegram shows a large fire accompanied by sirens and explosions. Another video posted online showed the anti-aircraft system in action around the town, which is just 32 km (20 miles) east of Russia’s border with NATO member Estonia.
Moscow claims to have thwarted all attacks against Russia. Russia typically describes all Ukrainian drone strikes as unsuccessful, regardless of the damage caused on the ground.
Russia says Ukrainian drones tried to attack a TV tower in the Bryansk region. No fatalities were reported. Moscow also said its planes had destroyed four Ukrainian fast attack boats carrying up to 50 paratroopers in the Black Sea.
Russian Counterattack
On the other hand, Ukrainian officials said Russia launched a massive joint attack on the capital Kyiv overnight using drones and missiles.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said via Telegram on Wednesday that Russia used what it believed to be an Iranian-made Shahed drone in the attack. It said Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers then launched missiles targeting the capital.
“Several groups of drones are heading towards Kyiv from different directions,” he said.
More than 20 enemy targets were destroyed by air defense forces, the government said, but as a result of falling debris in various districts of Kyiv, two people were killed and three others were injured.
The night attack came as Russia accused Ukraine of launching several drone strikes against six regions in central and northwestern Russia on Wednesday night, including the Moscow region. One attack reportedly damaged several aircraft at a northwestern Russian airfield. Ukraine has not commented publicly on the attack.
Ukrainian President Zelensky’s Coup Threat
Former CIA member and analyst, Larry Johnson, said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was under threat of a coup.
In the Russia Today report, Johnson said the coup would likely be carried out by the country’s military. This is because the country’s counterattack against Russia did not bring about a significant breakthrough.
“Zelensky will most likely be overthrown by coup in the next three to four weeks, because of the huge discontent among troops on the eastern front,” Johnson told Redacted host Clayton Morris.
Ukraine’s counterattack is said to have failed to achieve a major breakthrough. This has even made Kyiv’s allies in the West such as the United States (US) begin to express disappointment with Ukraine’s tactics.
Johnson added that Kyiv was already completely dependent on the West. However, Ukraine’s growing needs on the battlefield continue to grow, while success is yet to be seen.
“The US strategy in this conflict is to trap Russia in an unwinnable war and encourage regime change in Moscow,” he added. “Instead, this will happen to Ukraine, and Washington will have to find a way to withdraw from the conflict, because they grossly underestimated Russia’s economic and military power.”
Prigozhin Airplane Crash Investigation
The Kremlin on Wednesday (30/8/2023) said in the results of the investigation that there was an element of intent in the plane crash that killed mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin.
This was the first explicit admission from Russia that it was possible that Prigozhin had been killed.
“It is clear that various versions are being considered, including the version – you know what we are talking about – let’s say, a deliberate atrocity,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, as quoted by Reuters.
“Let’s wait for the results of our Russia investigation.”
The Embraer private jet that Prigozhin flew from Moscow to St. Petersburg Petersburg crashed north of Moscow and killed all 10 people on board on August 23, including two other key Wagner figures, four of her bodyguards and three crew members.
So far the Kremlin itself has rejected accusations of being behind the accident. Speculation that Putin killed Prigozhin is an absolute lie, according to the Kremlin.
